Hockney’s Car Hire

I am a little fashionably late to the Hockney tributes. Whilst I have been away in Italy with some time to think, I was trying to find a way to express just how much his work has inspired and influenced my life. I really do mean my life, even if that sounds a bit grand.

From the way he handles colour, which has completely taken over our home palettes and how we divide up our house, particularly those LA paintings, to how I document my own world. He completely changed how I hold onto memories, whether that is through photos or sketching out quick scenes and compositions.

I was first introduced to his work back in photography A level, or maybe even earlier during art GCSE (shoutout to Mr Theobald for that). It was his playful approach to photography that caught me, specifically the joiners. Laying up multiple images from different angles to build a bigger piece is so simple it is genius, and I have always loved the process.

I started writing this from a Ryanair window seat on the way home. Looking through my camera reel, I had all these leftover images of our rental car from the holiday, and I knew exactly what to do with them.

It makes you think about the other times you take multiple photos in that exact way, like house viewings or taking pictures for Vinted.

I have thrown in a few other joiners from over the years too, a method that has really stuck with me since school. It sums up how I approach all my creative projects, blurring the lines between different mediums and keeping the whole process playful.

Thank you Hockney for helping me see the world from multiple angles, you diamond 💎 ✨
